Plateau’s Housing Crisis: Tenants Decry Unaffordable Rent Increases

Tenants in Plateau State have expressed concerns over the rising cost of housing in the region, with many struggling to afford the increased rent prices.

This follows a survey conducted in Jos to evaluate the current housing situation in the state.

A recent surge in housing and space rental costs has sparked widespread outcry from residents. Mrs. Kachollom Michael, a hair stylist who has been paying N120,000 as rent for her salon, revealed that her rent has been increased by 15 percent. Michael, who is already struggling with the current economic challenges, fears the unaffordable rent may force her to close her business.

“I have been renting this shop in Yingi even before COVID-19, and I have been paying N120,000 since that time. This January, the agent came with a letter to inform me of a 15 percent rent increase. If I cannot pay, I’m told to consider the letter as a notice before my rent is due,” Michael explained. She called on the Plateau government and relevant authorities to intervene and regulate the activities of property agents.

Similarly, Miss Naomi Elijah, a teacher and single parent, was forced to move from her apartment in Rayfield to a more affordable location in Jos due to the rising costs. She also urged the government to address the situation before it worsens.

In response, Mr. Kitkabam Manasseh, an agent with Aduwamai and Company Limited, which manages a large number of properties in Rayfield and Jos, attributed the rent hikes to the general increase in the cost of living across the country. Manasseh stated that the rent hikes reflect broader economic trends, not just the housing sector.

“I cannot speak for every agent or landlord, but this rent hike is a reflection of the general cost of living across all sectors. The government has contributed to the increased cost of living, not the agents. I advise tenants to be patient and pray for provision to meet their needs,” Manasseh said.

When asked about government or private housing schemes in the state, Manasseh stated he was unaware of any such initiatives in Plateau.
