At least 164 people have been killed and hundreds injured after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, leaving buildings damaged or collapsed and triggering a large-scale search for survivors.
The earthquake struck on Monday, August 10, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region. Tremors were felt across several parts of Colombia, as well as neighbouring Ecuador and Panama.
Rescue teams race through damaged areas
Emergency workers, soldiers, police officers and local volunteers have been deployed across affected communities as authorities continue searching damaged structures for people who may still be trapped.
Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó are among the areas that reported significant damage. The scale of destruction has complicated rescue operations, particularly in remote communities around the epicentre.
More than 1,600 buildings were reportedly damaged, with dozens collapsing completely, while disrupted communications and difficult terrain have made it harder for authorities to establish the full extent of the disaster.
Cali, Pereira among worst-hit cities
Cali was among the major cities affected, with reports of structural damage and disruption to medical facilities. Pereira also recorded significant damage, while residents rushed into the streets as the earthquake struck.
Some airport operations were temporarily affected as authorities inspected runways, terminals and other infrastructure for safety concerns.
Aftershocks complicate rescue efforts
The main earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks, raising concerns over weakened structures and creating additional risks for rescue workers.
Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain cautious and avoid entering damaged buildings until they are declared safe.
Government mobilises emergency response
The Colombian government has activated emergency response measures as authorities coordinate rescue, medical assistance and relief operations.
