President of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, (NIS), Alabo Charlesye David Charles has called on professional bodies in Nigeria to sanction any professionals in politicians found wanting of ethical codes and standards.
Surveyor Charles made the call in Ibadan on Saturday while delivering the Annual Alumni Lecture of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association entitled “The role of professional bodies in nation building: The Nigerian Situation”
The NIS President pointed out that in doing this, there is the need for the professional bodies to monitor the performances of the professionals that are presently in politics and as well collaborate with research institutions to deepen their contribution to nation-building.
Surveyor Charles maintained that there is also the need for all tiers “of government to use science and technology to solve the myriad challenges facing our nation”, adding, “the only way Africans can gain respect is through science and technology backed by innovative political leadership”.
“Technology, artificial intelligence, Internet of things, and visual reality have brought many professions to a common play field. There is a great need for sectoral professions to close ranks so that they can better relate and play adequate supportive role to the nation’s development “, he said.
Surveyor Charles stressed that professional bodies are becoming more like political parties where elections have become rancorous and subject to primordial considerations of tribe, religion and such other sectional interests.
The NIS President noted that professional associations needs to evolve “systems that are not only democratic but strongly guided by high moral principles and ethics”,
Speaking further, Surveyor Charles emphasized that professionals in government and industry should stand their grounds to ensure the code of ethics of their professions guide and direct their actions”
On the roles expected of Alumni association, the NIS President urged the professionals to infuse orderly behaviour and integrity into politics in Nigeria,
“Nation building through Alumni Associations or their roles cant be negated, primarily because most times, it’s a healthy, professional platform where intellectuals meet to exchange ideas, network and mentor, lobby/pressure members of ruling class and encourage members to participate actively in politics and also give back to their institutions”
President of UI Alumni Association Worldwide, Professor Elsie Adewoye stated that the role of professional bodies in maintaining ethical standards in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasised urging UI alumni to continue to provide excellent leadership and solution providers to solve Nigerian problems.
In his remarks, the Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Adebola Ekanola said all Nigerians must be ready to contribute to nation building.
“It is clear that many people have got it wrong that the task of nation building is exclusive of those in politics but it is clear that all hands must be on deck. All professionals have important roles to play in the construction and reconstruction of Nigeria. If professionals would rise up to the task, we would begin to see the transformation we desire”, he said
