ADC Accuses Federal Government of Misleading Nigerians on Food Production

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Federal Government of misleading Nigerians with false claims of improved local food production. The party said the government’s narrative does not reflect the daily struggles of farmers and families across the country.

In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said insecurity and the displacement of farmers especially in northern Nigeria make any talk of increased food output unrealistic.

The party noted that many farmers who remain on their land are struggling to survive as the prices of fertilisers and other farm inputs continue to soar.

“The Federal Government’s claim of falling food prices is false and deceptive. Across the country, families are hungry, and farmers are struggling. What the Tinubu administration is doing is manipulating statistics and weaponising hunger for political gain,” the statement read.

The ADC also criticized the alleged hoarding of imported food while millions of Nigerians face hunger, describing it as a deliberate strategy to exploit poverty for political purposes.

The party argued that the reported drop in food prices is artificial, driven by import waivers that have flooded the market with cheap foreign products.

“This is not the result of sound economic management or increased local production,” the ADC stated. “These imports may reduce prices temporarily but are destroying local capacity. Farmers cannot compete amid rising input costs and worsening insecurity.”

Calling the government’s claims “strange and dishonest,” the ADC questioned how domestic production could be growing when bandit attacks continue to drive farmers off their land and the cost of cultivation keeps climbing.

The party urged the Federal Government to review its agricultural strategy and implement policies that genuinely protect farmers, stabilise food prices, and guarantee food security.

“Nigeria needs policies that empower farmers and ensure true food sovereignty not propaganda,” the statement concluded.
