The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans for the construction of a new, modern FCT Administration (FCTA) secretariat in Garki, Abuja, to replace the current facility, which he described as “outdated.”

Wike made this announcement during the inauguration of the Arterial Road N5 project from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Abuja on Friday. The minister urged Julius Berger, the firm overseeing the project, to shorten the project timeline from 18 to 14 months, offering them priority on future projects, including the new secretariat.

Emphasizing the need for a modern facility, Wike noted, “The current FCTA secretariat, built in the 1980s by a military administration, no longer meets our standards. We aim to establish a new structure that embodies the FCT’s role as the heart of Nigeria, something that visitors to Abuja will recognize as a symbol of our progress.”

The Arterial Road N5 project itself is intended to enhance infrastructure for the densely populated area, easing travel and boosting economic activity. Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Shehu Ahmad, described the project as a four-kilometer, six-lane dual carriageway linking several districts and major roadways, which will ultimately improve access for communities like Kado, Karmo, Gwarinpa, and Dei Dei.

The Senate President, represented by Senate Committee Chairman on the FCT, Ibrahim Bomai, praised the FCTA’s ongoing work to strengthen Abuja’s infrastructure, pledging legislative support to expedite development projects that align with the FCT’s growth.
