Stakeholders Call for Standardization In The Built Environment.

Building industry stakeholders want the building code updated to reflect modern conditions and address the nation’s ongoing building collapse problem.

They Stated this in Abuja on Tuesday evening at a seminar on building collapse with the theme “Review of building collapse in Nigeria: critical outlook and the way forward “

The Summit organized by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, NBRRI brought together stakeholders in the building industry to proffer solutions to the critical issues of building collapse.

The participants said, the continued cases of building collapse had become worrisome hence the need for collective efforts to address the menace.

One of the speakers and chairman NBRRI Governing Board, Dr. Uche Egenti who described the summit as apt advocated that resolutions from the summit be implemented by relevant authorities.

Speaking on the theme of the Summit , Reviewing of Building collapse in Nigeria -A critical outlook and the way foreword, the Director General of NBRRI, Prof Samson Duna decried the high rate of building collapse in recent times without sanctions on offenders, saying that it was a shame on the profession.

He urged the participants to come up with strong recommendations and communique in the form of a roadmap to be presented to the appropriate authorities like the Ministry of Housing.

Prof Duna identified lack of proper supervision, substandard materials and lack of approval as some of the factors responsible for the constant building collapse in the country.

Declaring the summit opened, the Minister of science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Adeleke Olorunnibe Mamora advised the professionals to adhere strictly to their code of practice and sanction defaulters.

Also, the House Committee on Research Institute, Prince Olaide Akinyemi urged NBRRI not to relent in its efforts to have a standardized built industry .
