A two-storey building on Winners Way Junction, Ashi Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, collapsed, injuring a security guard.

The incident occurred few weeks after the collapse of an uncompleted five-storey hotel building adjacent to one of the new generation banks at Awosika in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The building, according some residents, housed a pharmacy, supermarket and a church.

The head of the vigilantes in the area, Olusegun Adeagbo, said, “The building started caving in around 10pm. When I noticed, I went to wake the security guard attached to the building and as he was making his way out, the first part of the building collapsed.”

A resident, Serifatu Lateef, said when she first heard the blast of the collapse, she thought a trailer hit the building, Punch reports.

A pharmacist, Mr Gabriel Bakare, who owned a drug store in the building, said, “I received a call around 2:45am that the building collapsed. I could not leave my house by that time because where I reside is far from this place. But by 6am when we got here, we saw that everything was gone; goods worth millions were in the building when it collapsed.

“The owner of the building is trying to cover up the incident because we have yet to see any government agency. When something like this happens, there should be investigations to know where the failure came from, but we haven’t seen anyone yet.”

The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Adewale Onifeso, said investigation had commenced into the incident.

“Thankfully, no life was lost,” he added.
