To commemorate his 82nd birthday and 22 years on the throne, the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu I, welcomed select journalists to his Iga Iduganran Palace. In an exclusive conversation, he discussed Lagos’ growth, national unity, traditional leadership, and the principles guiding his reign.
Promoting Religious Harmony
Oba Akiolu recalled reaching out to former U.S. President Donald Trump to correct misconceptions about Nigeria’s religious harmony.
“Trump was misinformed. Christians and Muslims are one family here. Violence affects us all,” he said.
He also praised Nuhu Ribadu’s appointment as National Security Adviser, describing him as intelligent and capable.
Lagos Deserves Special Recognition
The monarch reaffirmed his advocacy for Lagos to receive special federal status due to its national importance and population pressure.
“Lagos changes lives. Granting it special status is long overdue,” he said, referencing a 1956 appeal by Oba Adeniji Adele to the British Colonial Office.
Urban Renewal with Compassion
“Development should not push people out of their homes. Let them return when projects are complete,” he urged, emphasizing inclusive urban renewal.
Respect for Tradition and Law
Addressing the controversy surrounding someone who styled himself “Obi of Lagos,” Oba Akiolu said the issue was criminal, not traditional.
“Every ethnic group deserves respect, but tradition must be protected,” he said.
The Igbo Community in Lagos
The monarch praised the Igbo community’s industrious nature, acknowledging their vital role in the state’s growth.
“They’re hardworking and ambitious. Lagos belongs to all who live and work here,” he noted.
Relationship with Politicians and Tinubu
While stressing his neutrality, Oba Akiolu praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.
“Politicians don’t fight they disagree. I told God Tinubu would one day be president. He’ll complete his mission by God’s grace,” he said.
Faith and Leadership
“My dream was to be a leader, not a politician. Our problem isn’t resources but our distance from God,” he remarked, warning against greed and corruption.
Traditional Governance in Old Lagos
He described how Lagos’ governance evolved, lamenting the proliferation of Obas and the resulting land disputes.
“In the past, markets reported directly to the palace there was order and accountability,” he said.
Lessons from the Police Force
A retired senior police officer, Oba Akiolu reflected proudly on his 32-year career.
“I never took bribes. The police taught me courage, truth, and fairness,” he said.
Two Decades on the Throne
“Faith, patience, and truth are key. After my coronation, I rejected luxury gifts and requested a health centre instead that’s true leadership,” he said, referencing the Primary Health Centre now serving his community.
Discipline and Public Service
He urged local governments to revive public hygiene programs and invest in community policing.
“We must restore discipline. Local councils should use their funds wisely for the people’s safety,” he advised.
On Obasanjo’s Leadership Style
“Obasanjo is brilliant but too regimental a product of his military background,” he observed.
Tinubu’s Presidency and Nigeria’s Future
“Only God knows the future, but Tinubu has a divine mission. Atiku Abubakar will never be president,” he declared confidently.
A Message to Nigerians
“Be honest, avoid greed, and trust in God. Nigeria is great and will become greater,” Oba Akiolu concluded.
