LASG Threatens Contractors over Non-Compliance with Construction Guidelines

The Lagos State Government has asked contractors to comply strictly with the state’s guidelines on construction of houses or be blacklisted.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Mr Wasiu Akewusola, gave the warning during an inspection tour of state housing schemes at Igando and Egan.

He said contractors found to have deviated from the housing construction guidelines given by the state government would be penalised.

Akewusola said such deviation and variation in quality and measurement would only compromise the structural reliability of the building in the long run and would affect the durability of the houses.

According to the PS, the mission of the state government is to provide and hand over high quality and safe shelters that are habitable to end users.

“The government of Lagos State will not tolerate any contractor who cuts corners to increase profit at the detriment of the people who will live in the homes,” he said.

Akewusola also urged all government contractors to abide by the set standards as failure to do so could attract total demolition of their structures; withholding of payments until necessary adjustment or corrections were made and blacklisting of erring organisations.

“Lagos State is known for high quality building construction and will not in any way give the citizenry anything short of that,” he said.

He also charged contractors to engage the services of core professionals in order to deliver standard products, adding that the state would increase its monitoring activities to ensure that all contractors complied with set standards and deliver projects within the agreed time.

Akewusola disclosed that the state housing scheme at Igando would be handed over to allotees soon and that the state would move on to complete other ongoing housing projects.
