The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin full-scale enforcement against illegal land reclamation and waterfront encroachment starting Wednesday, October 15, 2025, following the expiration of a seven day grace period granted to offenders.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who said the decision followed the continuous disregard for earlier government warnings to halt unauthorized reclamation activities.
Wahab explained that the grace period ended on September 25, adding that the state government would no longer delay the enforcement process.
“With the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum earlier issued by the Lagos State Government, it has become necessary to inform the public especially individuals, developers, and organizations involved in unauthorized reclamation or waterfront encroachment that full enforcement will begin on Wednesday, October 15, 2025,” the statement read.
He noted that the enforcement exercise would involve the removal of all illegal reclamation structures and fillings carried out without the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Drainage Clearance Certificate.
According to him, any equipment or materials found on unapproved sites will be confiscated, and those responsible will face legal action in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 and other relevant regulations.
Wahab emphasized that the government’s action is aimed at protecting the environment, preventing flooding, and ensuring the safety of residents.
He also cautioned members of the public to avoid purchasing land or property from operators engaged in unauthorized reclamation activities.
“The general public is hereby warned not to patronize or purchase land from illegal reclamation agents in order to avoid falling victim to future enforcement measures,” Wahab stated.
