Lafarge Africa Plc has introduced EcoCrete, Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, marking a significant step toward greener construction in the country. The new product reduces carbon dioxide emissions by at least 20% compared to traditional CEM I concrete, without compromising on quality or performance.
The company’s Ready-Mix plant in Abuja has been fully transitioned to producing EcoCrete, kicking off what Lafarge describes as a major rollout of the eco-friendly material.
Lafarge Africa’s Group Managing Director and CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, highlighted the launch as part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainable development in Nigeria’s construction industry. “EcoCrete expands our range of sustainable solutions and supports the country’s shift to a low-carbon economy,” he said. “This innovation aligns with our goal to help customers build smarter, with less environmental impact.”
Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Ready-Mix at Lafarge Africa, explained that EcoCrete is suitable for various applications, from residential buildings to infrastructure projects like roads and bridges. He emphasized that the product allows contractors, engineers, and architects to meet sustainability targets while maintaining the strength and durability expected of traditional concrete.
“EcoCrete offers the same reliability and versatility as conventional concrete but with a significantly lower carbon footprint,” Williamson noted. “This innovation gives builders the option to make environmentally responsible choices without sacrificing performance.”
Emmanuel Ilaboya, Head of Innovation and New Product Development at Lafarge Africa, described EcoCrete as a climate-smart solution developed through rigorous research. He said the product is positioned to help Nigeria confront the challenges of climate change by providing a scalable alternative that supports sustainable construction practices.
“EcoCrete is more than just a product it’s a critical part of our response to the urgent need for greener building materials in Nigeria,” Ilaboya said.
