In a bid to strengthen internal security and reinforce grassroots policing, the Federal Government on Wednesday commissioned a state-of-the-art smart police station in Katampe, Abuja.
The facility, built by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund and formally handed over to the Nigeria Police Force, is part of a broader strategy to modernise policing infrastructure and enhance public safety across the country.
At the inauguration ceremony, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Nla representing the Minister, Ibrahim Gaidam described the project as a significant step towards reinforcing law and order at the community level. He said the smart station underscores the government’s commitment to citizen security and the professionalisation of police services.
“This facility is a reflection of our shared resolve to secure communities, foster trust between citizens and law enforcement, and ensure effective service delivery,” Nla said. He urged officers deployed to the station to uphold the values of professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights, stressing the importance of responsive and transparent policing.
Nla also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering the Nigeria Police Force in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises public safety and institutional reform.
The smart police station equipped with CCTV surveillance, perimeter fencing, a solar power system, and uninterrupted water supply was described by the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, as a “mission statement for nation-building.”
“This is more than just a police outpost it’s a model for modern policing, built to align with today’s security demands and foster meaningful community engagement,” Sheidu said.
He also announced the commencement of a housing project to provide rank-and file police officers with improved accommodation, highlighting the importance of officer welfare in delivering effective policing.
“As we enhance infrastructure, we must also invest in the wellbeing of those who serve,” he noted. “Stable, dignified living conditions are key to operational effectiveness.”
The facility’s off grid 30kW solar system was delivered in partnership with the Rural Electrification Agency, ensuring reliable, sustainable power for 24/7 operations.
Additional smart stations are expected to be inaugurated in Enugu, Kogi, and other parts of the country in the coming weeks, as part of a nationwide initiative to modernise police presence and build trust at the local level.
