The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has pulled down more than 1,000 illegal shanties and makeshift structures along a road corridor in Karsana, near the Bunkoro District of Gwarimpa.
The Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, who supervised the exercise on Monday, said the clearance was part of a citywide sanitation operation targeting illegal occupants and individuals described as “persons of questionable character.”
According to him, the operation deliberately spared the houses of indigenous residents but would continue until the entire two-kilometre stretch of the proposed Ring Road 3, particularly around the intersection of N16 and RR3 near Map Global Estate, was completely cleared.
“You can see the shanties and squatter settlements springing up here. This is part of our ongoing sanitation exercise across the city to improve security and restore order,” Galadima explained. He disclosed that over 1,000 temporary structures had already been removed, with more to go in the coming days.
He further noted that the clearance would be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Resettlement to ensure that genuine indigenous properties were protected.
Also speaking, the FCTA’s Director of the Command and Control Unit, Peter Olumuji, who represented the Director of Security, Adamu Gwary, said the operation demonstrated the link between urban development and security, adding that no arrests were made during the exercise.
