Fashola Tasks Estate Surveyors on Best Practices as 670 New Members Take Oath of Membership

The newly inducted estate surveyors and valuers have been asked to eschew all tendencies capable of undermining the professional ethics in the overall interest of the people and country at large.

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Raji Babatunde Fashola disclosed this at the 46th induction ceremony for the newly registered estate surveyors and valuers on Thursday in Abuja.

The Minister who was represented by Mustapha Sherif Umar urged the new members to uphold professionalism and be a good ambassador of the profession anywhere they find themselves.

He commented the leadership of
Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON) for continually  raising the bar of excellence of the board and regulating estate surveyors in the country.

On his own part the Chairman ESVARBON, ESV Gersh Henshaw called on the inductees not to compromise standard in discharge of their duties adding that the instruments of practice such as stamps and seal handed over to them were given to hold in trust for the board.

According to Henshaw ” I assumed the mantle of leadership of the board of 5,055 persons was so registered by the Board . We have since in two induction ceremonies increased the number to 5,651 and will today in this epoch making occasions add 648 persons to Register in the first time since the establishment of the board in 1975 that the board has Inducted the highest number of newly registered persons in one one induction ceremony.

“As we hand over to you the instruments of practice  : Stamps and Seal , please be reminded that the instruments are given to you to hold in trust for the board . They remain properties of the board and could be withdrawn from you if you practice contrary to prescribed rules regulations.

” We are in a dynamic world with fast changing technology and ways of doing things . I therefore commend you to embrace continuing professional development.  Continuing professional development is key to your currency and relevance in practice.  The board has even made attainment of a minimum of 20 credit hours of participation in approved mandatory continuing professional development programme a condition precedent to annual renewal of practicing license ”

While admonishing the inductees the ESV Adebiyi Adesanya tasked the  inductees on integrity and ethics of the profession urging them not to fall into temptation that would make them compromise the standard.

He also advised them against diverting or investing client’s funds into personal businesses no matter the challenges.

Adesanya also cautioned the new estate surveyors against ostentatious lifestyles that would jeopardize their careers.

Another issue I want to discuss is temptation.  As Estate Surveyors and Valuers, we are open to the temptation of mis-managing client’s funds and some of us have done so to their peril and disgrace. You must avoid this avoidable trap. In the wisdoms of our founding fathers, as Estate Surveyors and Valuers we are to maintain two accounts , the client’s account and Partnership account. They are exclusive and should be rigidly followed .

He encouraged them to have a mentor whom they can learn from and also be a role model for the younger ones .

” In every profession, there are seniors ahead of you who are to help you take the most appropriate steps in your professional development towards the realization of your dreams. This is what necessitates you having a MENTOR so that you can maximize your potentials and make a meaningful impact in the overall interest of the profession.

” Your call today to the mainstream of the Estate Surveying and Valuation profession is an enviable call to destiny and a dream come through.  It is a future that is filled with hopes and also challenges. I believe that your training through the University or Polytechnic and the apprenticeship training have provided everything you would need for an enviable and impactful life in this noble profession.
