The Enugu State Government has approved the construction of 19,000 housing units as part of efforts to reduce the state’s housing deficit and make accommodation more affordable for residents.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Enugu, on Sunday.
1,000 Homes Approved for New Enugu City
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ben Okoh, said 1,000 fully detached terrace houses would be constructed as part of the first phase of the housing development around the New Enugu City project.
The units will comprise four-bedroom and five-bedroom homes.
Okoh said the housing project would complement the 6.5-kilometre dual carriageway already completed for the first phase of New Enugu City, alongside ongoing internal road construction.
18,000 Units Planned for Gateway Estate
The government is also developing an additional 18,000 mass housing units at Gateway Estate in Enugu.
According to the commissioner, the estate will be supported by essential infrastructure, including roads, water supply and electricity, to create a fully serviced residential community.
The government said the combined 19,000 housing units are expected to help address the state’s housing shortage and reduce the cost of accommodation.
Enugu Approves New Road Projects
The State Executive Council also approved the immediate commencement of the 10.5-kilometre Igogoro–Amachara–Ikpamodo–Okpo-Amaada Road project.
Intervention works were also approved for flood-prone sections of major roads in Nsukka.
The works will include the construction of five adjoining streets, rehabilitation of damaged drainage systems and clearing of blocked drains to tackle recurring flooding.
More Equipment for Works Ministry
The council further approved the procurement of more than 30 pieces of light equipment for the Ministry of Works.
The equipment will support direct labour projects, emergency interventions and routine road maintenance across the state, with the government expecting the investment to reduce maintenance and emergency response costs.
Approval was also granted for the completion and upgrade of Wings C and D of the Enugu State Secretariat Complex in GRA, while Wings A and B, which are currently in use, will undergo rehabilitation.
Enugu Approves Major Tourism Projects
The State Executive Council also approved three major tourism development projects aimed at boosting the state’s tourism economy.
They include the Ovu Lake Golf Resort in Akpawfu, the Akwuke and Attakwu tourism projects, and the Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car Project.
The Ovu Lake Golf Resort is expected to feature an 18-hole championship golf course, a luxury hotel with more than 100 rooms, a 600-seat conference centre, boat regatta facilities, landscaped gardens, clubhouses and recreational areas.
The Akwuke project will include a sand beach, theme park, water park, scenic boardwalk and family recreational park, while the Attakwu project is planned as an ecotourism destination featuring an animal sanctuary and other nature-based attractions.
The proposed 5.32-kilometre Okpatu–Awhum Cable Car will connect the Cross of Hope on Okpatu Hill to Awhum Waterfall, with stations planned at the Cross of Hope, Awhum Monastery and Awhum Waterfall.
