The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down academic activities in public universities across Nigeria if the Federal Government and state governments fail to address its outstanding demands.
ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, issued the warning in a statement on Friday following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) at the University of Abuja.
The union said it could reactivate its nationwide strike “without any further notice” over the failure of the government to fully implement the agreement reached in December 2025.
ASUU Demands Implementation of 2025 Agreement
According to the union, the December 2025 agreement followed more than eight years of negotiations and struggles between ASUU and the government.
However, the union said the Federal Government and several state governments had yet to fully implement the agreement.
ASUU also demanded the payment of the remaining 3.5 months of withheld salaries owed to its members.
The union further raised concerns over the non-remittance of billions of naira deducted from lecturers’ salaries.
Union Gives Strike Warning
ASUU warned that continued failure to address issues affecting the welfare and well-being of university lecturers could trigger industrial action.
“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” Piwuna said.
The union’s warning raises the possibility of renewed disruption of academic activities in public universities if the outstanding issues are not resolved.
