Aba Power, the latest entrant in Nigeria’s electricity distribution space, is set to generate over 350 new jobs as it begins a wide-scale rollout of prepaid meters this month.

According to Edise Ekong, Senior Brand and Communication Manager at Aba Power, the employment surge comes through strategic collaborations with three key meter suppliers, each contributing a significant number of direct jobs through activities ranging from assembling to installation.

“Each of our meter partners will be engaging more than 100 workers directly,” Ekong stated. “These roles span from assemblers and installers to support functions like logistics, warehousing, and security—all benefitting from this rollout.”

One of the partners, Kayz Consortium, is leading the charge with plans to assemble 90,000 meters between April and December 2025. Their 130-person team, which includes eight foreign experts from China’s original equipment manufacturers, will kickstart operations this April within Aba Power’s Osisioma Industrial Layout facility. The expatriates will oversee quality control and training before handing over to the fully trained local workforce.

In addition to Kayz, two other firms—Chint Power and Energy Services and Eve Electric, both of Chinese origin—are set to begin installations from May, deploying 34 technicians each.

The rollout also involves Nigerian manufacturers like HAMPOC Utilities Limited and M E Meters, with both companies assigned to install 20,000 prepaid meters within four weeks of deployment. Combined, these efforts are expected to significantly improve service delivery across nine local government areas within Aba Power’s operational zone.

“This initiative will drastically reduce reliance on estimated billing and usher in a more transparent, accountable system,” Ekong noted. “Our goal is to meter all of our 350,000 customers in the Aba Ring-fenced Area within a year.”

He described the project as a major step forward for customers and the company alike: “With prepaid meters, both the provider and the user have a clear, fair system. It’s a win-win.”
