Severe flooding caused by two days of heavy rainfall has displaced more than 470 children and destroyed over 270 homes in Zaria, Kaduna State. The downpour, which began on Thursday and continued into Friday, left several communities submerged and families struggling to survive.
A joint assessment team comprising the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local government officials confirmed the extent of the damage after visiting the worst hit areas.
The delegation, led by Zaria Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, inspected affected communities including Kofar Kuyanbana, Gangaren Mobil, Bayan Cinema in Tudun Wada Ward, as well as Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha in Tukur Tukur Ward.
The floods swept away food, clothing, electronics, and other valuables, leaving hundreds of households stranded. Although property losses were extensive, authorities reported that no lives were lost a situation they described as a rare mercy given the scale of destruction.
In response, the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Zaria has begun distributing relief materials to displaced families. However, the organization stressed that the needs far outweigh available resources and appealed to government agencies, non governmental organizations, and private donors for urgent intervention to prevent worsening hardship.
Officials assured residents that more assessments and relief efforts are underway to support affected households and help them rebuild.
