President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Makurdi on Wednesday as tensions continue to rise over a wave of deadly attacks in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, where over 100 people have reportedly been killed in recent days.

Touching down at the Nigerian Air Force Tactical Air Command base in Makurdi at exactly 12:58 p.m., the President was received by Governor Hyacinth Alia and top state officials. In anticipation of the high-profile visit, the Benue State Government declared a public holiday to allow for full stakeholder engagement.

The visit comes in response to growing public outrage over the persistent violence attributed to armed groups operating in the region. In a statement released earlier in the week, Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President was in the state to “personally assess the crisis that has led to tragic loss of lives and widespread destruction.”

During his stay, Tinubu is expected to hold meetings with traditional rulers, community heads, religious leaders, political figures, and youth representatives. The goal, according to the Presidency, is to foster dialogue and map out long-term strategies to halt the bloodshed.

The President had earlier condemned the violence and called on all sides to embrace peace and tolerance. He also expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families and communities affected by the unrest.

Originally slated to visit Kaduna State on Wednesday to commission a number of state projects, the President’s itinerary has been adjusted. That visit will now take place on Thursday, June 19.
