President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to commission Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway on Saturday, June 1, as part of a multi-day working visit to Lagos. The coastal road is among the hallmark infrastructure undertakings under his administration’s development drive.
A statement released by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the President will also launch a series of other major infrastructure projects during the visit. These include the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road (constructed under the Tax Credit Scheme), Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, and the 7th Axial Road, aimed at improving interconnectivity in the Lagos region.
In addition, President Tinubu will virtually commission several strategic road infrastructure projects spread across Northern Nigeria. These include the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II, Yakasai-Zalli Road, and the Kano Northern Bypass. Others listed are Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.
During his Lagos visit, the President will also take part in commemorative events marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which he currently chairs. The golden jubilee celebration, initially launched in Accra earlier in April, will continue in Nigeria’s commercial capital with symbolic activities planned.
Among the scheduled events is a reenactment of the original 1975 founding declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island. The event will bring together key dignitaries, including the only surviving signatory to the original declaration, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), who is expected to give a commemorative speech.
President Tinubu will address participants at a high-level forum hosted at the Eko Hotels and Suites, where he will speak on ECOWAS’s regional achievements, challenges, and vision for integration. The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray, will deliver the welcome remarks, while former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, will lead a review of the bloc’s five-decade trajectory alongside expert analysts.
The President will observe Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before concluding his trip and returning to Abuja.
