A member of the North East Development Commission and former two-term House Representative, Sam Onuigbo, has commended President Bola Tinubu and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu following their endorsement of three federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria’s South‑East.

The President recently signed into law bills establishing a Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences and a Federal College of Education both in Bende, Abia State alongside a Federal University in Okigwe, Imo State.

Onuigbo lauded Kalu as a visionary lawmaker, expressing that the Deputy Speaker’s sponsorship and advocacy were instrumental in the initiative. He remarked: “Kalu’s legislative foresight and effective advocacy continue to inspire hope for a better future and sustainable progress for the younger generation,” and praised Tinubu’s swift assent, viewing it as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive national development.

The newly created institutions are expected to expand access to quality education, catalyse socio‑economic growth in Abia and Imo States, and support research and training in fields such as medical sciences, education, and applied technology.

Onuigbo, who sponsored the Climate Change Act of 2021, highlighted the long‑term benefits: preparing students to respond to evolving global challenges from food security to climate resilience.

The NEDC board member concluded by expressing southern Nigerians’ gratitude and optimism that this landmark move would usher in generations equipped to meet the demands of a competitive global economy
