Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has commissioned Africa’s first renewable energy college and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive to develop a skilled clean energy workforce.
The facilities were inaugurated on Tuesday at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara.
College to Train Renewable Energy Technicians
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Shettima said the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, Osara (BARECKS), was established to address the shortage of skilled technicians required to drive Nigeria’s energy transition.
The institution will provide practical training for technicians, solar installers, operators and maintenance professionals, equipping them with the skills needed to support the country’s growing renewable energy sector.
Tinubu Calls for More Partnerships
The President described the institution as the first of its kind in Africa, modelled after India’s successful Barefoot College programme.
He called on development partners, private investors, research institutions and international organisations to collaborate with the college in expanding research, innovation and technical training.
Tinubu also praised the project’s completion within two years, describing it as evidence that major public infrastructure can be delivered on schedule.
Green Hydrogen Research Facility Launched
The Federal Government also commissioned the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant to promote innovation in emerging clean energy technologies.
The facility is expected to support research, demonstration projects and capacity building in green hydrogen production as Nigeria expands its renewable energy portfolio.
Boost for Nigeria’s Energy Transition
The projects align with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which seeks to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 through increased investment in renewable energy and clean technology.
Government officials say the new facilities will help build the skilled workforce needed to accelerate rural electrification, expand renewable energy access and create green jobs across the country.
