A dispute over unpaid rent escalated into a fistfight on Monday night in the Lambata community of Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, after a tenant and a caretaker reportedly attacked each other.
Eyewitness Benjamin Auta stated that the confrontation began when the caretaker allegedly placed an additional padlock on the tenant’s door due to rent arrears and a directive for the tenant, identified as Benard Moses, to vacate the premises.
Auta explained that Moses returned from work to find his room secured with a second lock. Angered, he went to confront the caretaker at his residence.
“I heard raised voices, and before I could check what was happening, they were already fighting,” Auta recounted.
According to him, the tenant had been issued a quit notice for failing to pay the outstanding six months’ balance on his rent. The tussle continued until neighbours intervened and alerted local vigilantes.
The vigilante team, led by a member identified only as Yakubu, arrived to separate both men. Yakubu confirmed that the matter has since been reported to the police.
A police officer at the Kwali division also confirmed the incident, noting that an investigation is underway.
