The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has clamped down on a major building materials dealer, in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State.
The men of the organization stormed the State from their national headquarters in Abuja.
Surrounded by heavily armed security operatives, the operation which lasted about an hour, led to the sealing-off of every part of the business premises, located in Jalingo metropolis.
Answering questions from media practitioners on the rationale behind the selective operation, the Chief Standard Engineer officer, who led the operation, Olumide Alade, said the organization was working based on a “tipoff.”
Stressing the functions of the organization among which As stated by him include “undertaking investigations to the quality of products, services, materials, commodities and processes,” their actions, he said “is in line with the relevant standard as applicable to these activities.”
Alade, who went ahead to explain the series of complaints that had been tabled before the organization by consumers as a result of substandard products, said the organization had resolved to rid the markets of substandard products.
He said “the purpose is to identify the locations and put the products on hold while we conduct further investigation on the quality of the products.”
The organization, as stated by him, “is of the opinion that the products being pushed into the Nigeria markets must conform with the requirements of relevant national and international standards so that consumers get value for their money.”
The sealing-off of the premises, as of the time of filing this report, was noticed to be telling negatively on builders, who have put on hold their projects as a result of the scarcity of building materials in the State.
