Experts from the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) have called on young graduates to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative tool for Nigeria’s engineering and entrepreneurial sectors.

Speaking at an event organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, the Chairman of NSE Lagos Branch, Kesha Olukorede, challenged the 507 inductees to utilize AI to address challenges in security, infrastructure development, and other critical sectors.

“You are either jumping on the train or being left behind,” Olukorede remarked. “The world is not waiting, and Nigeria cannot afford to lag. Graduates should adopt a forward-thinking mindset, leveraging technology to drive progress and create solutions for the nation’s challenges.

Dideolu Falobi, Managing Director of Kresta Laurel Ltd. and guest speaker at the event, emphasized AI’s revolutionary potential in engineering entrepreneurship and nation-building. He described AI as a groundbreaking force enabling machines to perform human-like tasks, particularly in construction, road management, and other engineering applications.

“AI basics must be integrated into any educational pursuit,” Falobi stated. “It’s not just about knowing AI; it’s about deploying it effectively across sectors to solve problems and drive development.”

Addressing concerns about AI-induced job losses, Falobi reassured attendees, explaining that technological revolutions historically create more opportunities than they replace. “Every new revolution brings innovation and opens new doors. AI is no different. It will create opportunities we cannot yet fully imagine,” he added, referencing the growth seen in ICT and social media industries.

He urged graduates to focus on acquiring essential skills and embracing lifelong learning to remain relevant in the fast-evolving job market. Falobi noted that AI could provide solutions to challenges in infrastructure and resource management, stressing the need for proactive preparation to harness these benefits.

Representing NSE President Margaret Oguntala, former Lagos Branch Chairman Ayotunde Ogunnaike commended the new inductees for their milestone achievement. She emphasized the importance of professional ethics, urging members to uphold the society’s values while contributing to national development.

The event highlighted AI as a crucial component for advancing Nigeria’s engineering sector, positioning young engineers at the forefront of innovation and progress.
