The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has set up a Disability Inclusion Technical Working Group (DITWG) to strengthen the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring that people living with disabilities enjoy full rights and equal opportunities.
Represented by the Director of Economic and Social Rights, Mr. Harry Obe, Ojukwu explained that the working group emerged from a resolution reached at a 2024 stakeholders’ workshop on disability rights. The DITWG, he noted, would coordinate and monitor the implementation of the African Disability Protocol (ADP) while also building capacity, providing technical support, and mainstreaming inclusive policies across sectors.
The NHRC chief commended the role of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and development partner Sightsavers in pushing for the ratification of the protocol.
In his address, the Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Chief Ayuba Gufwan, said over 35 million Nigerians with disabilities stand to benefit from the ADP and Nigeria’s Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018. He pledged the commission’s support in ensuring implementation.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD), FCT Chapter, Comrade Chris Agbo, described the inauguration of the DITWG as a landmark in the disability rights movement. He stressed the importance of provisions in the ADP, such as accessibility, the right to work, and active participation in decision-making.
Agbo urged sustained collaboration, political will, and adequate resources to dismantle barriers confronting persons with disabilities, adding that a more inclusive Nigeria is possible if stakeholders remain committed.
The event drew representatives from ministries, departments, and agencies, disability groups, development partners, and civil society organisations.
