The Nigerian Economic Society (NES) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to engage local economists urgently.

NES President, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, highlighted persistent economic issues, including the Naira’s depreciation, requiring a domestically focused approach.

Speaking in Abeokuta after inaugurating the Ogun State chapter, he criticized overreliance on foreign economic expertise.

Adenikinju emphasized local economists’ superior understanding of Nigeria’s economic environment, essential for crafting effective and sustainable policies.

He pointed out a communication gap between NES and policymakers, stressing the importance of collaboration for impactful reforms.

“We advocate evidence-based policymaking; local economists understand Nigeria’s system better than any foreign consultant ever could.”

Adenikinju insisted local experts must be consulted for reforms, ensuring economic policies reflect Nigeria’s unique challenges.

The newly inaugurated Ogun State chapter, led by Professor Comfort Amire and Dr. Oluwasogo Adeniran, has clear goals.

He tasked them with analyzing Ogun State’s economic conditions and proposing solutions beneficial to state and national growth.

Adenikinju envisioned the chapter as a platform where economists, stakeholders, and policymakers collaborate for sustainable development.

Professor Olusola Kehinde of FUNAAB encouraged NES to educate Nigerians about current economic realities and vital government policies.

In her address, Professor Amire praised the inauguration, calling it vital for fostering collaboration toward Nigeria’s economic progress.
