The Minister for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu, began his two-day site inspection in Yobe State by urging a rapid wrap-up of the housing and school infrastructure spearheaded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), emphasizing the urgent need to deliver completed projects to the communities.
The minister inspected various construction sites and urged consultants to expedite the 250 housing units project in Damaturu, aiming to provide timely accommodation for residents.
The NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Goni Alkali, outlined the commission’s broader initiative to construct 500 housing units across Yobe State, including 250 in Damaturu and 50 each in Potiskum, Geidam, and Nguru. These developments are complemented by essential amenities such as schools, roads, electricity, and water supply systems.
Dr. Hassan Kankaka, the project consultant, reported that 200 houses have been completed, with 300 more at various stages of construction. Additionally, the NEDC has inaugurated and handed over several schools in Potiskum, including Buni Gari, Gashu’a, and Arikime Primary and Secondary Schools, to the Yobe State Government. These schools are designed to alleviate overcrowding and enhance the quality of education for approximately 20,200 pupils.
Dr. Garba Iliya, Director of Finance and Administration at NEDC, highlighted that the new schools feature modern facilities such as classrooms, administrative blocks, staff quarters, and commercial centers, all aimed at improving the learning environment and supporting community development.
The NEDC’s initiatives in Yobe State reflect a concerted effort to rebuild and enhance infrastructure, thereby fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for its residents.
