The Lagos State Building Control Agency has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing approved building plans, standards and construction regulations across the state.
LASBCA General Manager, Gbaye Florence, stated this during a meeting with the Property and Environment Writers Association of Nigeria in Lagos.
The association visited the agency’s headquarters in Ikeja to congratulate Gbaye on her appointment and discuss areas of collaboration.
The engagement also comes ahead of PEWAN’s 2026 Annual Conference scheduled for October.
Stronger Building Compliance
Gbaye said LASBCA would continue working to ensure construction activities comply with approved plans, specifications and applicable regulations.
She also stressed the importance of creating a safer, more resilient and sustainable built environment for Lagos residents.
The agency’s position comes amid wider efforts by Lagos to strengthen building safety and regulatory oversight.
Recent state initiatives include the Lagos Building Insurance Scheme, which provides additional protection against risks associated with buildings.
Gbaye urged PEWAN members to support public awareness of the scheme, particularly among property owners and developers.
The Lagos Building Insurance Scheme was launched in July as a digital compliance and risk-management programme. It integrates insurance verification with LASBCA’s regulatory framework and the Electronic Physical Planning Permit System.
Digital Permit System
LASBCA also called for stronger public awareness of Lagos’ Electronic Physical Planning Permit System.
The system allows property owners and developers to submit building-related applications electronically.
According to the agency, the digital process is intended to reduce physical bottlenecks and improve efficiency in obtaining development approvals.
Gbaye also highlighted the Certified Accreditors’ Programme as another avenue for strengthening collaboration between regulators and built-environment professionals.
Media Role in Building Safety
The LASBCA general manager said the media has an important role in promoting public awareness of building regulations and government programmes.
She said stronger cooperation with professional associations could help improve conformity within the built environment.
PEWAN Chairman, Okwy Iroegbue, commended LASBCA’s efforts to promote compliance and safer communities.
Iroegbue said PEWAN members had published more than 400 stories over the past two years on building collapses, housing shortages, climate resilience, green construction and urban regeneration.
The development places greater emphasis on enforcement, public education and digital monitoring as Lagos continues efforts to improve building safety.
