Lafarge Africa Plc has introduced the 2025 edition of its women focused empowerment programme, BuildHer by Lafarge. The initiative is designed to increase female participation in construction by training women in tiling and block laying, giving them the skills to build sustainable careers in a field long dominated by men.
The programme is open to women from low-income communities in Lagos, Ogun, and Cross River States. It runs for eight weeks and combines classroom lessons with practical training. Participants will learn tiling and block laying using Lafarge’s Supafix and SupaSet products. They will also take classes in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and mentorship to help them succeed as professionals or business owners.
Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director/CEO of Lafarge Africa, said the programme reflects the company’s commitment to empowering women. According to him, the training allows women to take active roles in construction while building economic independence. He described it as a way to reduce poverty, break barriers, and create opportunities for families and communities.
Viola Graham Douglas, Director of Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainable Development, said the programme has grown since it began in 2022. More than 60 women have already been trained. She explained that this year’s edition is larger, with greater focus on certification and recognition. Graduates will receive certificates endorsed by Lafarge Africa in partnership with trade associations and technical institutions. They will also be admitted into the Block Makers and Tilers Association of Nigeria, giving them professional status in their trade.
Every participant will receive starter kits to help them begin work immediately after graduation. The best 10 performers will also be specially recognised. To keep supporting participants, Lafarge Africa plans to launch a BuildHer Alumni Network for mentorship and visibility. A Train the Trainers scheme will also be introduced so that graduates can pass their knowledge to more women across different communities.
The 2025 edition is supported by state governments. In Lagos, partners include the Ministry of Youth and Social Development led by Commissioner Mobolaji Ogunlende, and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund. In Ogun State, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, under Commissioner Adijat Motunrayo Adeleye Oladapo, is backing the project. In Cross River, the Ministry of Women Affairs led by Commissioner Oedema Irom is supporting the training.
Lafarge has also made provisions to help women balance family responsibilities while taking part. Support includes free transportation, meals, and a crèche service for mothers with babies under 18 months. These steps are designed to remove barriers and allow participants to complete the training without disruption.
BuildHer 2025 is not just a skills programme. It is a platform for women to gain confidence, independence, and recognition in Nigeria’s construction industry, helping them build better futures for themselves and their families.
