Following renovation work on the Sani Abacha stadium, Kano Pillars will continue to play their home matches away from home in the new Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) season which is billed to kick off on Friday, December 17.

It will be recalled that for two seasons, Pillars adopted the Ahamdu Bello stadium Kaduna as their home ground for continental and NPFL matches.

Consequently, there was jubilation in the ancient city of Kano recently when it was reported that the ‘Masu gida’ boys as Kano Pillars are fondly called were going back home.

However, the Media Officer of Pillars, Alhaji Rilwanu Idris Malikawa on Tuesday issued a statement that the League Management Company (LMC) had reversed the earlier approval.

He disclosed that the Chief Executive Officer of the LMC, Malam Salihu Abubakar, had written to inform Pillars that they won’t start their home matches in the 2021/2022 NPFL season at the Sani Abacha stadium unless the worn out artificial turf of the Sani Abacha stadium is replaced.

Malikawa was quoted as saying Pillars were shocked by the decision of the LMC.

“We were expecting the LMC to send another delegation to come and inspect the renovations work for final approval but to our surprise, we received the statement from them that our stadium won’t host league matches until the new grass is installed.”

The spokesman of the club said the LMC has directed Pillars to pick an alternative home ground for the coming season.
