Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed heartfelt condolences over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his statesmanship and commitment to strengthening Nigeria–India relations.
In a message posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Modi described Buhari as a leader of wisdom and dignity, recalling fondly their past interactions and shared vision for deepening cooperation between the two nations.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari,” Modi wrote. “I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India Nigeria friendship stood out.”
Modi went on to say that the people of India join in mourning Buhari’s death and offered condolences to the late president’s family and the Nigerian people.
“I join the 1.4 billion people of India in extending our heartfelt condolences to his family, the people, and the government of Nigeria,” he added.
Buhari, who died on Sunday in London at the age of 81, previously served as Nigeria’s military leader from 1983 to 1985 and returned to office as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023. His burial is scheduled for Monday in Daura, Katsina State, according to Islamic rites.
