A land ownership dispute involving former Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Amos Adamu, and a private individual, Olusegun Odebiyi, has been postponed by an Oyo State High Court until June 27, 2025.
The legal matter, registered under Suit No: HOI/14/2021, is being presided over by Justice G.A. Sunmonu at the FiAT Court 2 located on Ring Road in Ibadan.
Friday’s court session was brief, as the defense counsel, Taiwo Ajayi, requested a delay citing the unavailability of her client’s primary witness. She informed the court that she had only recently learned the witness could not attend the proceedings.
However, Oludare Akanbi, representing the plaintiff, opposed the excuse, pointing out that the date had long been agreed upon for continuation of the hearing. He noted the inconvenience caused, especially as he had traveled from outside Ibadan for the case.
While not objecting to the adjournment outright, Akanbi raised concerns over ongoing hostilities allegedly linked to the dispute. He appealed to the court to issue a clear directive restraining the defendant’s associates from further damaging his client’s property or harassing individuals connected to the land.
He reminded the court that similar complaints had been raised in previous sittings, alleging destruction of valuable crops and structures on the contested land.
“My Lord, I am appealing for calm and for both sides to stay away from the property until the matter is resolved legally. Destruction of assets and attacks must not continue,” Akanbi stated.
Responding, Justice Sunmonu urged both parties to maintain the peace and allow the judicial process to take its course.
“This court strongly advises all involved to avoid any further confrontation. Let peace be maintained by both parties pending the final resolution of this dispute,” the judge ruled.
The hearing has now been officially rescheduled for June 27, 2025, when the court will resume its examination of the case.
