Workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have announced an indefinite strike scheduled to commence in the early hours of Monday, January 19, 2026, over what they described as prolonged neglect, unresolved welfare issues, and breaches of trust by the administration.

Employees of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have declared an indefinite strike action beginning at 12:00 am on Monday, a move expected to disrupt public services across the nation’s capital.

The decision was announced on Friday in Abuja by the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC), which said the strike would involve all categories of staff, including workers in public secondary schools and the College of Education, Zuba.

Addressing journalists, JUAC President, Rifkatu Iortyer, accused the FCTA management of sustained inaction and deliberate demoralisation of its workforce, citing a range of unresolved issues affecting staff welfare and career progression.

According to Iortyer, the strike follows what the union described as a “breach of trust” by the administration, particularly the failure to remit pension deductions and National Housing Fund (NHF) contributions, which the union said threatens the future security of workers.

She also condemned the continued retention of retired Directors and Permanent Secretaries, describing the extension of their tenure as a clear violation of existing Public Service Rules.
The union further rejected the outcome of the 2024 promotion exercise, which saw about 2,000 staff promoted out of more than 7,000 candidates who sat for the examination. JUAC alleged that the process was deliberately manipulated to limit promotions and avoid payment of accrued promotion arrears.

“We reject the mass failure recorded in the last promotion exercise. The system was designed to frustrate and demoralise workers,” Iortyer said.

Additional grievances raised by the union include unpaid promotion arrears, poor working conditions, lack of staff training, intimidation of workers, and the non-payment of allowances owed to enforcement officers of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).

Warning that the union would no longer tolerate delays, Iortyer said the strike would remain in force until all demands were addressed.

“It is on this basis that we declare an indefinite strike action beginning Monday,” she stated.
Findings indicate that the strike will paralyse operations across the FCTA Secretariat, as well as its Departments, Secretariats, and Agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Capital Territory Administration had yet to issue an official response to the strike declaration.
