The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced the reconstruction of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) terminal in Lagos and urged travellers to arrive early to avoid disruptions.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, the agency cautioned passengers to allow more time for their journeys, noting that ongoing works could affect traffic and access to the airport. It advised travellers to leave home early, follow traffic instructions, and make use of designated car parks.
FAAN further appealed to the public to limit airport visits to only those travelling, citing space constraints during the period of rehabilitation.
The project is part of a broader upgrade of aviation infrastructure approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 1, which allocated more than ₦900 billion for airport rehabilitation nationwide. Out of this amount, ₦712.25 billion was earmarked for the reconstruction of MMIA’s terminal one.
Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo explained that the Lagos terminal will be completely stripped down to its structure, with all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems rebuilt. The rehabilitation is expected to take 22 months to complete.
