Expert Calls for Affordable Housing and Easier Mortgage Access

Access to affordable housing in Nigeria remains a major challenge, with improved mortgage financing seen as an important step towards helping more people own homes.

Making housing finance more accessible could help prospective homeowners overcome the financial barriers that prevent them from purchasing properties. However, the availability of suitable mortgage products, manageable repayment terms and affordable homes remains essential to expanding homeownership.

Nigeria’s housing sector continues to face several structural challenges, including high property costs and limited access to long-term financing. These difficulties make it harder for many households to move from renting to owning their homes.

Improving mortgage access would require stronger collaboration among government institutions, financial organisations and private developers. Such partnerships could help create financing options that meet the needs of different income groups.

There is also a need to ensure that housing developments are priced within the reach of their intended buyers. Expanding access to loans alone may not solve the affordability problem if the cost of purchasing a home remains beyond what households can reasonably afford.

A coordinated approach that combines affordable housing delivery with accessible mortgage financing could help more Nigerians achieve homeownership and support the long-term development of the housing sector.
