Former Senate President David Mark has issued a stern warning over the escalating wave of attacks in Benue State, stating that continued insecurity marked by hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction—could force residents to defend themselves if the government fails to act.
In a statement delivered through his media aide, Paul Mumeh, on Sunday in Abuja, Mark described recent violence across Benue communities as “senseless, tragic, and unacceptable,” lamenting the breakdown in protection for citizens in his home state.
“Government must rise to its responsibility, or risk leaving the people with no option but to defend themselves,” he emphasized, warning that a failure to uphold the safety and welfare of Nigerians is a severe dereliction of duty.
Highlighting the urgency, Mark called on the federal government to immediately fulfill its constitutional mandate to safeguard lives and property, alongside the Benue State government under Governor Hyacinth Alia, urging a ramp-up in security efforts. He appealed to traditional rulers and community leaders to support security agencies in identifying and apprehending attackers.
Mark praised the resilience of Benue residents, urging unity and peaceful resolve: “This is a trying moment for our people. We must unite, mobilise, and speak with one voice against the invaders. We must refuse to bow to fear… we must remain law-abiding, stay united, and uphold the enduring spirit of being our brothers’ keeper”.
