President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Senator Gbenga Ashafa as Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

Also, the President approved the appointment of Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin AbdulAbmJ as Executive Director, Business Development in charge of commercial, corporate & social housing.

The African Housing News gathered that the appointment is with immediate effect.

Recall that prior to the appointment, the organisation has been having an acting Managing Director in the last few months. With the new appointment, expectations will be on how the new management team can turn around the fortune of the institution, most especially since they are politicians and not technocrat.

Ashafa is a two-term senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from Lagos State. Senator Ashafa was inaugurated as a second-term senator representing the Lagos East Senatorial District in the 8th senate (2015–2019) on 9 June 2015.

Before he became a senator, he was responsible for land allocation and management in Lagos State and also served as Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Lands Bureau.

Ashafa is a member of the All Progressives Congress and serves as a member of the National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress as well as the Vice Chairman (South West) of the Southern Senators Forum.

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA), a wholly owned agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, was established vide Decree 40 of 1973 now cited as Act CAP F-14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

The Authority is supervised by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. The Authority which became partially commercialized in accordance with Decree No 25 of 1988 is charged with:

  • The preparation and submission from time to time, to the Government of proposals for National Housing Programmes;
  • The making of recommendations to the Government on such aspects of urban and regional planning, transportation, communication, electric power, sewage and water supply development as may be relevant to the successful execution of housing programmes approved by the Government; and
  • The execution of such housing programmes as may be approved by the Government.
