The Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) has revealed that Nigeria has locally produced and distributed about 128 million bags of fertilizer to farmers across the country over the last nine years through the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI).
In a statement issued on Wednesday, MOFI noted that the scheme was designed to guarantee a reliable and affordable supply of fertilizer to Nigerian farmers while also boosting domestic production capacity.
The PFI, launched on December 23, 2016, under the administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, was created to address long-standing inefficiencies in fertilizer supply and distribution.
According to the statement, the initiative has now entered its third phase, known as PFI 3.0, which aims to strengthen the supply chain for raw materials to blending plants and drive Nigeria closer to self-sufficiency in food and industrial crop production.
“As of September 2025, more raw materials have already been supplied or ordered than the total supplied in 2024. Additional agreements have also been finalized with raw material manufacturers to stock warehouses nationwide,” the statement said.
It added that between 2022 and 2025, 48 vessels delivered key raw materials for blending, with 10 vessels already discharging cargoes this year, accounting for more than 560,000 metric tonnes of inputs received at Nigerian ports.
MOFI’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, stressed that the initiative is not just about production numbers but also about building long-term sustainability in the agricultural sector.
The statement further disclosed that MOFI will officially take over the operational management of the fertilizer programme from the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) by November 2025.
