The Lagos State Government has said it plans to work with local government chairmen for effective maintenance of tertiary drainage channels in councils.

According to a statement on Sunday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, stated this during a three-day management retreat in Lekki.

Bello said the retreat was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to ensure proper maintenance of drainage channels by enlightening residents and authorities.

He said, “It is high time engineers from the Ministry work closely with the local government chairmen and authorities on how to embrace drainage maintenance. They need to be enlightened that the maintenance of tertiary drains in their LGAs is their responsibilities while primary and secondary drain maintenance is the responsibilities of the state government.”

Bello urged the participants to demonstrate commitment to their duties, saying the government would continue to work on drains across the state.

“I commend the efforts of the emergency flood abatement teams for consistently de-silting and working on various linkages to the secondary and primary channels in all the 57 councils throughout the year to enable them to discharge efficiently and regularly,” he added.
