A tragic accident involving an articulated trailer claimed the lives of two individuals along the new Ibadan-Oyo expressway in Fiditi, located in the Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The victims, both middle-aged, were reportedly returning from Ibadan on Sunday evening when the incident occurred. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the trailer driver was attempting to swerve around a pothole when he lost control and crushed the victims, who were riding a motorcycle.
According to one of the bystanders who spoke with PUNCH Online, “The man died instantly at the scene, while the woman was rushed to a hospital. Unfortunately, she later passed away due to her injuries.”
Initial findings suggest that the driver of the trailer had been navigating the damaged section of the expressway when the crash happened. The poor state of the road has been a longstanding concern among road users in the area.
When contacted, the Deputy Corps Commander for Operations at the Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State, Bayode Olugbesan, confirmed the incident from Ibadan, stating that only one death had been officially recorded as of Sunday evening.
“Our officials have begun a hospital follow-up,” Olugbesan said. “We do not declare accident victims dead at the scene unless a medical professional has confirmed it.”
The tragic accident underscores the need for urgent repairs on the Ibadan-Oyo expressway, a vital link plagued by frequent accidents attributed to poor road conditions.
