Five people have died and 10 others have been rescued after two separate buildings collapsed in Kano State on Saturday, according to the Kano State Fire Service.

The incidents occurred at Gaida in Kumbotso Local Government Area and Kurna in Fagge Local Government Area, with emergency responders deployed to both locations.

The Fire Service Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, disclosed the development in a statement on Sunday.

Four workers killed at construction site

The first collapse occurred at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, at about 2:34 p.m.

The agency said an incomplete building measuring approximately 50 by 50 feet collapsed while six workers were carrying out construction activities at the site.

Firefighters who arrived at the scene rescued two workers alive. They were identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar.

Four other workers were rescued from the rubble unconscious but were later confirmed dead.

They were identified as 18-year-old Sunusi Surajo, 20-year-old Bashir Ibrahim, 25-year-old Ibrahim Ibrahim and 30-year-old Abubakar.

The victims were taken to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital before the matter was handed over to Inspector Adamu Garba of the Kofar Wanbai Police Division.

Islamiyya school collapse kills student

The second incident occurred at Kurna, behind a primary school in Fagge Local Government Area.

An Islamiyya school, Khadija Idris Bala, reportedly collapsed while nine students were inside.

Firefighters rescued eight of the students alive. They were identified as Hassana Isah, Usaina Isah, Zulaihat M. Gambo, Nawara Yahaya, Nusaiba Isah, Hasiya Munir, Khadija Isah and Hadiza Haruna.

The ninth student, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but later died.

The surviving students were handed over to the school headmaster, Muhammad Gambo Usman.

Causes under investigation

The Kano State Fire Service said investigations were ongoing to determine what caused both building collapses.

The agency urged property owners, contractors and construction workers to comply with approved building standards and observe necessary safety measures during construction.

It also advised stakeholders to exercise greater caution during the rainy season, when weakened structures and water-related factors can increase the risk of building failures.

The two incidents have renewed concerns over construction safety and the need for strict enforcement of building regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
