Ghana was plunged into mourning following a devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two prominent government officials, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The crash occurred in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, while the ministers were en route to Obuasi to attend the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP), a key initiative aimed at curbing illegal mining. Government officials confirmed that four people died in total, including the two ministers.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the Z9 military helicopter took off from Accra at 09:12 GMT before losing contact mid-flight.
The aircraft had five passengers and three crew members on board. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter burst into flames upon impact, with emergency responders unable to rescue any of the victims.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the fatalities, calling it a national tragedy. The crash site has been secured by security personnel, and a full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
As Ghanaians grapple with the shocking loss, tributes are pouring in for the late ministers, both of whom were regarded as dedicated public servants committed to national development.
