A two-storey building along Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ota-Ona in Lagos’ Ikorodu area suddenly gave way on Tuesday, trapping 14 people inside. Rescue teams managed to pull out 10 individuals alive, but sadly, one person was found deceased amid the rubble.
Three others are still missing as search efforts continue.According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the collapsed structure was an unfinished building behind a bungalow, containing two rooms and a parlour, spread over approximately 648 square metres.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, shared that rescue operations remain ongoing. “The building housed 14 occupants at the time of collapse, mostly adult males between the ages of 28 and 35. Ten of these people have been rescued and taken to hospital for medical attention,” she stated.
Multiple agencies have joined the rescue mission, including the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (Ikorodu Command), the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
Local eyewitness Rasheed Fatuga posted online that the building was situated directly opposite the Mobil Filling Station in Ota-Ona.
This heartbreaking incident follows a similar tragedy just a month ago, when a three-storey building under construction in Ojodu Berger collapsed, claiming five lives and injuring several others.
The cause of Tuesday’s collapse remains under investigation.
