President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to host a series of significant events in Lagos as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), alongside the commissioning of key federal infrastructure projects.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, announced that President Tinubu who currently serves as Chairman of ECOWAS will depart Abuja today to lead the Golden Jubilee ceremonies scheduled to take place at multiple venues across Lagos.
The commemorative event will begin with a symbolic reenactment of the original 1975 ECOWAS treaty signing, taking place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) on Victoria Island. This historical reflection will be followed by a high-level panel discussion led by the institute’s board chairman and former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi.
General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), the only surviving Head of State among the original signatories of the ECOWAS declaration, is expected to attend all commemorative activities and deliver a keynote address at Eko Hotels and Suites, where President Tinubu will also present the bloc’s achievements over the last five decades.
ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray will open the day’s events with a welcome address, setting the tone for reflections on regional cooperation, economic integration, and future strategies.
Following the ECOWAS engagements, President Tinubu will turn his attention to infrastructure development, commissioning a range of strategic national projects on Saturday, May 31.
These include, Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Lekki Deep Sea Port, Tax Credit Concrete Road, Flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, 7th Axial Road
The President will also inaugurate several northern road projects via virtual link, including, Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II, Yakasai-Zalli Road, Flag-off of Kano Northern By-Pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur-Malumfashi, Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III
President Tinubu will observe the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House in Dodan Barracks before returning to the Federal Capital Territory.
