President Bola Tinubu has submitted the name of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), to the Senate for confirmation as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The President’s nomination was contained in a formal letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
According to the letter, the appointment was made in accordance with Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC),” the President’s message stated.
Tinubu also attached the nominee’s curriculum vitae and urged the Senate to expedite its consideration of the appointment.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee of the Whole for screening and subsequent confirmation at plenary.
Professor Amupitan’s nomination, once confirmed, will position him as the head of Nigeria’s electoral body, responsible for overseeing future elections and electoral reforms across the country.
