Villagers in Umunobo, Nkwu‑Emeke, and Akalovu (Emekuku community in Owerri North LGA) are sounding the alarm after noticing armed, masked herdsmen grazing cattle on their farmlands. The intrusions have left local farmers worried and frustrated.
A resident, speaking anonymously to PUNCH Metro, recounted that on Wednesday morning, eight masked men emerged from nearby bushes toward the village, reportedly carrying AK‑47 rifles. The sight of armed individuals trampling through crops provoked fear and chaos among the villagers.
Concerns erupted after the herdsmen allegedly walked through and damaged farmlands as their cattle foraged. Although the group eventually dispersed, the incident has stirred fresh unease in the community.
Imo State Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma has reassured residents that no immediate threat exists. DSP Henry Okoye confirmed that local officers from Owerri Urban, New Owerri, and Owerri North divisions were dispatched promptly after reports surfaced. Additionally, a joint patrol team involving the Police Special Intervention Squad and soldiers from the Nigerian Army has been deployed to the area to bolster security.
“There’s no cause for alarm,” Okoye stated. “The situation is stable, and a strong security presence remains. We urge residents to continue their daily activities; their safety is assured.”
