A multi-storey building under construction in Ibadan’s Dugbe district collapsed on Sunday evening, June 1, 2025, following intense rainfall and accompanying storms.

The structure, intended for use by the fast-growing eatery chain Item7, gave way, with debris spilling onto the adjacent Dugbe–Mokola Road, obstructing one lane of this heavily trafficked thoroughfare.

Eyewitnesses reported that the sudden collapse caused panic among nearby residents and motorists. Emergency response teams promptly arrived at the scene, working diligently to clear the rubble and restore safe passage for commuters. While no casualties have been confirmed at this time, authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution when navigating the area due to ongoing cleanup operations.

The incident has sparked discussions on social media, with users expressing concerns about building standards and the potential impact of severe weather on structural integrity. Some commentators have questioned whether the building’s design was adequately suited to withstand the region’s climatic conditions.

As of Monday morning, one lane of the Dugbe–Mokola Road remains closed to facilitate debris removal, while the other lane has been reopened to traffic. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised the public to stay informed through official channels.
