Governor Ahmed Aliyu has officially initiated the construction of a ₦22 billion housing development in Wajake Village, Wamakko LGA, designed to ease the region’s urban shelter shortage. The project will include 300 three-bedroom and 200 four-bedroom flats, all sold on an owner-occupied basis to ensure affordability for civil servants and low-income residents.
During the ceremony, attended by Kogi Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and the Sultan of Sokoto, the governor underscored the initiative as a flagship of his urban renewal agenda. “When we took office, Sokoto didn’t own a single government house,” he remarked, noting the project’s significance in improving living standards.
The estate located close to the emerging Sokoto New City is being built in collaboration with Teamwork Construction Company Nigeria Limited and is expected to be finished within a year.
Governor Aliyu also outlined additional housing efforts: 500 units completed at Gidan Salanke under previous plans and a further 130 acquired in Kwannawa from the Federal Ministry of Housing.
Describing the development as “more than just bricks and mortar,” Aliyu called for high quality and timely delivery. He thanked his predecessor, former Governor Wamakko, and expressed appreciation for the wisdom of the Sultan of Sokoto.
Kogi Governor Ododo, who officiated the ceremony, heralded the estate as emblematic of empathetic leadership. “You are laying the foundation for a more humane and inclusive Sokoto,” he said, applauding it as a reflection of purposeful governance.
This ambitious initiative is part of Sokoto’s broader infrastructure and urban renewal drive, aimed at delivering sustainable socio-economic transformation across the state.
