Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London to coordinate the return of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s body to Nigeria, following the elder statesman’s death on Sunday.
Shettima was received at the airport by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar.
His visit to the United Kingdom comes on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who tasked the Vice President and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, with overseeing the final arrangements for Buhari’s repatriation.
Buhari passed away at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, in London, at the age of 82. He led Nigeria first as military Head of State between January 1984 and August 1985, and later served two terms as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
In tribute to the former president, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast throughout the country.
Further details regarding burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the presidency in the coming days.
